SUMMARY:Miyazu Tōrō nagashi Lantern and Fireworks Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMiyazu Tōrō nagashi(lantern) and Fireworks festival is the biggest event in Miyazu city\, Amanohashidate!! Thousands of red and white lanterns are lit and floated in the ocean to remember and pray for the souls of the dead.  Some people also write wishes on the lanterns.  Beautiful elaborately decorated Seireisen boats are floated and burned to mourn for those who have died in the past year.  After dark\, a large fireworks display is held in which 3\,000 brilliant fireworks light up the night sky. \nThe origin of the Miyazu floating lantern festival… \nThe town of Miyazu was formed about 400 years ago.  At that time\, the people of the town used to attach small lanterns to their offerings and float them in the ocean.  This was done to return the spirits of deceased family members back to the other world.  This custom is thought to be the origin of the festival that is celebrated today.  Soon\, the event became popular and the beauty of the “mourning lanterns” (the lanterns are primarily made to mourn for lost loved ones or one`s ancestors) floating in the water attracted many spectators from all around. \nYou can make your own lantern and make a wish for 800 yen(white and red lantern set)! \nhttp://www.amanohashidate.jp/lang/en/toro-nagashi-floating-lantern-festival-appendix-lantern-red-white-writing-example/ \nYou can see this festival at “Shimasaki Park” in Miyazu city Kyoto\, please see the map below. \n■Place: Shimasaki Park \n※Access:\nex1) Kyoto Station → about 2h30min by express Train → Miyazu Station → 10min on foot to Shimasaki Park \nex2) Amanohashidate Station→ 5min by Kyoto Tango Railway  →Miyazu Station →10min on foot to Shimasaki Park \n■Schedule \n6:00PM〜7:30 PM : Toro Nagashi Even \n7:30PM〜8:20 PM : Fireworks \nFor more information\, please check our upcoming posts on Facebook!! SUMMARY:Motoise Kono Shrine Aoi Festival
DESCRIPTION:Date: April 24th\, 2019 \nVenue: 430 Ogaki\, Miyazu\, Kyoto \nA festival held annually on April 24th at Motoise Kono Shrine.  The festival has a history of over 2\,500 years and is said to be the oldest continuing festival in the Tango area located in Northern Kyoto. \nThe Aoi Festival has a deep connection to Kono Shrine and shares its name with the Aoi Festival held at Kamo Shrine in Kyoto City.  At the Aoi Festival held in Kyoto City\, festival participants wear hollyhock (aka; athea). However\, at Kono Shrine`s Aoi Festival\, wisteria is used because it is often associated with the god Toyouke Oomikami. \nThe festival mainly consists of an o-mikoshi (portable shrine) procession\, Tachifuri sword dancing\, and Kagura Shinto dancing.  Sword dancing (Tachifuri) is especially significant as it is said to have originated in the Heian Period and is registered as an intangible cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture. \nOfficial Brochure: \nhttp://www.amanohashidate.jp/lang/en/fuchu-aoi-festival-official-brochure/

SUMMARY:Miyazu Matsuri Festival
DESCRIPTION:Every year in May the local Miyazu Festival takes place in the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods of Miyazu City. For the three days of the festival\, portable shrines belonging to the city`s two major shrines: Sanouguu Hiyoshi Shrine and Wakinomiya Shrine are pulled through the streets accompanied by taiko drummers beating out rhythms on taiko drum floats\, and traditional flutists. Dancers performing traditional Shinto dance known as Kagura also follow the stream of floats\, stopping occasionally to perform their dances. \nOn the third and final day of the festival\, the city’s inhabitants gather in the streets of the downtown area as stalls selling festival food and games are open in the evening during the festival`s final performances. The conclusion of the festival includes lion dancing and nerikomi\, the ritual in which the portable shrine is returned to the shrine. During the nerikomi ritual\, the portable shrine carriers lift the portable shrine and run back and forth through the streets before returning to the shrine.  At Sanouguu Hiyoshi Shrine\, the portable shrine is carried up the steps of the shrine after the nerikomi ritual ends which is quite a sight to see.  People line both sides of the step to watch the extremely heavy portable shrine be carried up the long flight of steps.
