Shiken-chaya Tea Houses

Shiken-chaya, the four tea houses located just outside the Chionji Temple gate that are said to have been in  business for about 700 years. All four shops serve fresh chie no mochi (directly translates to “rice cake of wisdom”) which is soft rice cake topped with azuki, or red bean paste.  It is even said that you can become smarter from eating this rice cake.
